Top-secret Picasso Is An MPV Masterpiece
Its recent models have been stunning, but the latest Citroen really is a work of art! Exclusive images in this week's mag show the new Picasso - and with an eye-catching design and superb practicality, it looks like building on the success of the existing model, which is currently the UK's best-selling MPV.
Up front, the Picasso wears the latest Citroen family face, with a smooth bumper and bold double-chevron grille. Large, angular headlamps and a wide air intake finish off the distinctive nose.
A deep front windscreen and tall side windows provide a high roofline, so there should be plenty of space inside. A full-length sunroof will be available as an optional extra for those wanting an even more airy feel.
The mid-sized MPV is tipped to have a flexible seating arrangement which can be altered according to the number of passengers or amount of luggage being carried. It will also get the scented air vent system first seen on the C4, plus the firm's lane departure warning aid.
Built on a modified version of the C4 platform, the next-generation Picasso should offer improved ride and handling over the current car. The stiffer structure will result in improved safety, so expect a high Euro NCAP crash test rating.
Engines are shared with the hatchback, too, which means a choice of 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol and diesel units will be offered. A five-speed manual gearbox is included as standard, while the 2.0-litre oil-burner gets a six-ratio transmission. An automatic will also be available as an option on the 1.6-litre petrol.
With the current model still proving popular, the next Picasso is unlikely to appear before summer 2006. Prices will remain competitive, so expect entry-level variants to start at less than £14,000.
